The Patriarchy

There’s a scene in the movie “The Red Pill” where a crowd of feminists have pulled the fire alarm on a men’s rights confab that was taking place in a university auditorium. The men are forced to leave the building and the feminists follow them, screaming obscenities at them, accusing them of all kinds of crimes against women. The men are the most pathetic, milquetoasty, middle-aged sad sacks. They even wait patiently until the feminists finish screaming at them before they attempt to get a word in edgewise, no sooner do the feminists begin cursing at them again. So deeply ingrained is their deference to women. You get the feeling these are precisely the men feminists hate the most, the polite demure western men, especially ones like these who have been dumped by their wives and taken to the cleaners in divorce court. Feminists never hate any real patriarch even half as much as this. It’s like communists always hate the bourgeoisie far more than they hate the nobility.

The less patriarchy there is in the west, the more women complain about it, not just about the last remaining vestiges of it, but about the patriarchy itself, as if it’s becoming more ubiquitous and oppressive precisely as it becomes ever harder to find and shrinks into oblivion. At the same time, in non-western societies that actually are patriarchal, women complain about it a lot less. Not only that, but western women, and the very ones who complain the most about patriarchy in the west, are the least likely to level accusations of patriarchy against actual patriarchy. This is particularly true of Islam, the most obviously patriarchal form of society in the world today. This lack of criticism is not merely a lack of interest or even the result of political correctness. Western feminists have embraced unreconstructed Islam as a sort of mascot religion, while they continue to viciously denigrate western Christianity that has hollowed itself out trying to appeal to their sensibilities. Only a few feminists go so far as to convert to Islam, but absolutely none become born again Christians. A small number have even travelled to the Middle East to join ISIS, the most retrograde form of Islam in the history of Islam itself. But even the most middle-of-the-road feminists defend Islam from accusations of patriarchy with the same righteous indignation they usually reserve for the defense of equal pay for equal work and abortion on demand.

Could it be what they hate about the west is that it isn’t patriarchal enough? It’s probably not that simple. Maybe they hate the dead patriarchy more than the live one because its death didn’t deliver to them all the benefits they had hoped for, like a mugger kicking the corpse of a victim because his pockets were empty. And maybe, despite all their efforts to be as unladylike as possible, feminists are at heart still women and retain that special visceral disdain for weak men. Some of them may be helplessly out of control and yearn to be dominated. In any case, they’re certainly very unhappy and every time they get what they say they want, they get even unhappier than before.

If a group of angry Muslims came to campus to preach jihad, hejab, and forty virgins in paradise for every suicide bomber, no feminist would accost them. They would treat them with deference. And if any of the jihadis paid them any attention, some of them might even fall in love.
